University of Arizona Adding Copper Helmets?
Per CBSSports.com, and UA’s athletic director, Arizona will be rocking copper domes “on a limited basis” next year. Here’s a poorly-done photoshop job from someone:
I’m not crazy about the look personally, but it could open the door up for some special uniforms— which unlike some purists, I enjoy.
AD Greg Byrne, in an email to fans and ticket holders:
“Copper is not only associated with our great state’s mining history, but it has influenced architectural design on campus, including our athletic facilities — most notably the ring at the top of the McKale Center, and the future North End Zone Football Complex. As such, we embrace the idea that as the University of Arizona we will incorporate copper into a special helmet design to represent our state and University. Copper will not replace our traditional colors of red and blue, and the copper helmet will be worn on a limited basis.”
Makes you wonder, is this cause for a special uniform vs. ASU? It has been a pretty big game the last few years with the attention AZ has been getting in college football, I bet Nike would love to put their stamp on this matchup.
UPDATE: University of Arizona broke these suckers out this weekend versus Oregon State. Not as bad as I thought they would be.
So they’re basically taking Notre Dame’s idea of the golden dome helmet…except Notre Dame already uses gold in their uniform, so it makes sense.
Reblogged this on But at the end of the day… and commented:
All I can think about is the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL.
It’s a nice hat tip to the mining industry, but unless there’s uniforms that accompany these, I’m having a hard time liking this idea. But who knows, maybe HGI will come up with something really interesting for them— they’ve been on a roll lately.
